Expanding Innovation Through Strategic Collaboration

AMI and Qualcomm are excited to announce that AMI’s industry-leading Aptio® V UEFI Firmware now offers full support for Qualcomm’s next-gen Dragonwing™ IoT platforms, the Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ-X and Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS6490. This milestone is the result of a close collaboration between AMI and Qualcomm to deliver robust, secure, and scalable firmware solutions for the next generation of IoT devices.

By combining AMI’s advanced UEFI firmware technology with Qualcomm Technologies’ cutting-edge IoT platforms, OEMs and developers can now access multiple operating systems through a single firmware image, accelerate their product development cycles, and enhance NPU-powered AI features.

For OEMs, ODMs and data center operators across the cloud, edge and IoT, Aptio V is the first choice for reliable, proven UEFI firmware to power up processors, peripherals and interfaces for today’s dynamic workloads. By combining feature-rich platform packages that are modular and easy to integrate, Aptio V ensures that the platform bring-up journey is efficient, cost-effective, reliable and on schedule.

“Qualcomm is thrilled to collaborate with AMI to bring advanced UEFI firmware support to our latest IoT platforms,” says Anand Venkatesan, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “AMI’s expertise in firmware fortifies our ecosystem and helps developers to innovate faster, with seamless interoperability.”

Srini Narayana, Vice President of Boot Firmware Technologies Group at AMI, commented that “This partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to providing best-in-class solutions that drive the future of industrial and embedded IoT and edge computing. ATLANTA, GEORGIA: AMI, a global leader in dynamic firmware, proudly announces the successful implementation of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) support in its flagship Aptio® V UEFI Firmware. This achievement represents the industry’s first known working implementation of PQC in UEFI firmware, setting a new standard for infrastructure security and regulatory readiness for the dawning age of quantum computing.

Addressing Quantum Challenges to Infrastructure Security and Compliance

As quantum computing advances, traditional cryptographic algorithms face the risk of obsolescence, potentially exposing critical systems to security threats and compliance issues. By integrating PQC support into Aptio V UEFI Firmware, AMI has proactively addressed this risk – to ensure that the firmware powering data center infrastructure and connected devices will remain secure against future quantum attacks.

Beyond technical innovation, PQC adoption is rapidly becoming a regulatory imperative. Global regulatory bodies including NIST in the United States, ENISA in Europe and the UK’s NCSC are now recommending or requiring organizations to inventory their cryptographic assets, assess quantum risks and migrate to quantum-resistant algorithms. Implementing PQC in Aptio V signifies an important step in helping organizations demonstrate compliance with evolving cybersecurity mandates, avoid audit failures and maintain trust with customers and stakeholders.

“Today’s announcement of PQC implementation in Aptio V serves as another example of our rigorous focus on security and compliance in our products, which is at the core of everything we do,” said Sanjoy Maity, AMI CEO. “Once again, AMI is leading the industry forward – by delivering a groundbreaking innovation in Aptio V to our customers that future-proofs their systems against the new and evolved cybersecurity and regulatory landscape that quantum computing represents.”

[JANUARY 14, 2025]

To assist in securing AMI’s OEM/ODM partner systems and their customers who have deployed those systems, AMI and Microsoft have released an open-source patch for platforms running AMI’s Aptio® V UEFI BIOS Firmware on Windows® that were produced and put into service with a test version of the Platform Key (PK).

This patch should serve as mitigation to CVE-2024-8105, also referred to as “PKFail”. The mitigation is licensed and distributed as open source, with no guarantee or support from Microsoft, AMI or other affiliates. In the case of multiple system deployment, the patch should be tested prior to installation across all systems.

ODMs, OEMs, CSPs, Tier 2/3 datacenters, and individual users of Aptio V UEFI BIOS can determine if they have a test version of the PK running by leveraging the Windows Powershell script provided with the mitigation.

Downloads of the patch can be found at https://github.com/CERTCC/PKfail/.
