As the Open community gathers in Taipei this week for the 2025 OCP APAC Summit, AMI will take the opportunity to highlight our continued involvement with the OCP Security Appraisal Framework and Enablement (S.A.F.E.) Program, and our achievement as the first and only independent firmware vendor (IFV) approved under its guidelines.

Announced during the 2023 OCP Global Summit, the OCP S.A.F.E. Program is designed to provide a strong degree of security assurance for the provenance, code quality and software supply chain for hardware and firmware releases for the wide variety of processing devices that are found in modern data centers.

To earn this prominent distinction as “OCP S.A.F.E Approved”, AMI previously completed two in-depth security audits with an OCP-approved security review provider. During the 2024 OCP Global Summit in San Jose, we announced that our Aptio Community Edition™ had successfully completed the OCP S.A.F.E. audit process, and later that year we completed the same for our MegaRAC Community Edition™. As part of the security reviews, Short Form Reports (SFR) from the audit process were published on the OCP marketplace, available through the links below:

Helping Bring Order and Transparency to the Open-Source Firmware Supply Chain

Through four decades of firmware development and early adoption of open-source architectures, AMI has a keen understanding of how fragmentation of open-source solutions can lead to sacrifices in transparency and security. Community-driven verification of software clones – exacerbated by inconsistent branching – can become impossible without a single source of truth, leading to increased fragmentation and potentially jeopardizing the security of the ecosystem.

We believe that our approach is one of many ways that AMI stands out from the competition: by not only providing development services – which alone may increase fragmentation – but also maintaining an open-source contribution on which to base those development services. In this way, AMI is well positioned as the IFV best suited to drive security, transparency, and reliability over a multitude of fragmented solutions.

Through our OCP S.A.F.E verified development services and open-source contributions to the OCP GitHub repository, AMI distinguishes itself as a single source of truth bringing secure and transparent provenance to the firmware supply chain. Our contribution to the OCP GitHub helps bring a level of order and reliability to an open ecosystem, attested by the security audit – and is why we are honored to hold the first and only OCP S.A.F.E approvals granted to an IFV.

Learn More during 2025 OCP APAC Summit

We invite the community to our OCP S.A.F.E. presentation on August 5 at the 2025 OCP APAC Summit to better understand the advantages that an OCP S.A.F.E. audited open-source contribution provides, to both AMI customers and the entire open community. We also invite you to meet with AMI experts in Booth G09 during the Summit and learn about our cutting-edge technologies and initiatives that are helping to drive the open ecosystem and the future of computing forward.

In addition, during the Summit AMI will join the CHIPS Alliance (Common Hardware for Interfaces, Processors and Systems) in Booth A13, to share how open-source silicon is helping to accelerate chip design. The CHIPS Alliance seeks to develop and host high quality, open-source hardware code (IP cores), interconnect IP, open-source firmware and software development tools for design, verification, and more. The Alliance is supported by the Linux Foundation and endeavors to provide a barrier-free collaborative environment, with the goal of lowering the cost of developing IP and tools for hardware development.

Together with the Alliance, AMI will provide a demo of Caliptra – a project that originated with OCP for datacenter-class SoCs like CPUs, GPUs, DPUs and TPUs. The Caliptra project outlines the specification, silicon logic, ROM and firmware for implementing a Root of Trust for Measurement (RTM) block inside an SoC, giving it Identity, Measured Boot and Attestation capabilities. We encourage the open compute community to visit the CHIPS Alliance booth to learn more about how to get involved and collaborate in these efforts.

Sanjoy Maity, AMI CEO, commented that “OCP continues to do extremely important work to help make the next generation of data centers that will push the boundaries of AI and HPC more sustainable and efficient. Our boot and manageability firmware, as well as our data center management technologies, are at the core of this open-source-driven movement towards a more sustainable future – ushering in this next generation of sustainable data centers with intelligent firmware. Our roster of presentations and demos highlight our broad involvement and commitment to OCP and the open compute ecosystem, and we look forward to welcoming guests to Booth B6 for another exciting OCP EMEA Summit.”

During the 2024 Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit, a keynote was given by GEICO outlining the reasons why in 2023 they made the decision to reverse direction for their compute infrastructure and move it back from the cloud to on-premises. Server and storage resources had become unfit, with unfit profiles for GEICO workloads while escalating costs for those resources made the cloud model impractical for their business.

The move to on-premises would carry a number of perceived challenges. The accepted model for enterprises and next-wave datacenters had been to stress the capital budget by partnering with OEMs, who would deliver more cookie-cutter solutions. The OEM hardware model turned out to be effective for managing workloads but carried limitations and little flexibility.

Figure 1 below shows the issues Geico identified with Cloud and OEM solutions.

Open-source computing was a new consideration. Widely used to outfit hyperscale datacenters and driven primarily by cloud service providers, open source was considered to be unattainable for enterprises and next-wave datacenters that didn’t carry the same volume requirements or development resources. But the benefits of being able to deliver on performance, offering simplified management and flexibility with open standard support in a future-proof lower-cost solution were too good for GEICO to pass up.

Figure 2 below shows the advantages GEICO uncovered by working through an OCP model.

Today, using OCP inspired and approved hardware for enterprise and next-wave datacenter builds is highly attainable. Reliability of configurable CRB-proven hardware has been steadily increasing, providing new areas of flexibility. One flexible area is uniformity of server management and platform security through Redfish and DC-SCM 2.0. Complimenting hardware flexibility are firmware/ software packages from suppliers like AMI that ensure interoperability and deliver on firmware updates, security and full datacenter resource management. With the introduction of these products and features, enterprise customers are able to fill the gaps that OEMs typically provide through their product uniformity.

Logistically speaking the OCP model is far more workable today as well. Participating ODMs are seeing more healthy business opportunities where product hardware is now under commoditization pressures. This is further enabled through new standards that are giving ODMs a greater ability to own product definition, where they can accept requirements from enterprise customers. And where integration and deployments have been requiring support and expertise, OCP contributors like AMI are able to provide the tools and expertise that get the datacenters up and running.

Conclusion

In the end, GEICO leveraged OCP partnerships to build out their datacenter infrastructure saying they had achieved multiple successful deployments. The presentation concluded with some challenges for consideration going forward. These challenges will continue to get answered as enterprise and next-wave datacenters look more toward contributor expertise and the available firmware, software and tools that fill the gaps for a successful deployment. Today AMI is engaging with its ecosystem partners to ensure this model works, going forward. Solutions that will address the challenges identified by GEICO will be available to better streamline implementation.
